Cyberattack Disrupts Systems of Gambling Giant IGT

Industry:,

Gambling and lottery giant International Game Technology (IGT) has taken certain systems offline after falling victim to a cyberattack over the weekend.

The incident, the company says, was discovered on November 17, and has disrupted certain parts of its internal IT network.

“An unauthorized third party gained access to certain of its systems, and the company has experienced disruptions in portions of its internal information technology systems and applications resulting from this cybersecurity incident,” IGT said in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

The company said it immediately activated its incident response plan and launched an investigation with help from external advisors.

“The company has also proactively taken certain systems offline to help protect them. The company’s ongoing investigation and response include efforts to bring its systems back online,” IGT said.

The gambling giant also noted that it has yet to determine whether the incident has had a material impact, and that it has been communicating with customers and other stakeholders.

“Where possible, the company has implemented alternatives for certain operations in accordance with its business continuity plans to mitigate disruptions and continue servicing its customers,” IGT said.

While the gambling company did not say what type of cyberattack it fell victim to, taking systems offline is the typical response to a ransomware attack. However, SecurityWeek has not seen any known ransomware group taking responsibility for the incident.
