AI will eat all our energy, unless we make it tiny

We Live Science

Left unchecked, AI’s energy and carbon footprint could become a significant concern. Can our AI systems be far less energy-hungry without sacrificing performance?

Artificial intelligence (AI) models require massive computational power, which in turn demands tremendous amounts of energy. In his talk, Roeland Nusselder, a computer scientist and the CEO of Plumerai, explores how the growing scale of AI models, such as those used in machine learning and natural language processing, are becoming ever more resource-intensive.

He goes on to show how the rapid development of AI technologies could potentially overwhelm our current energy infrastructure, unless we make significant innovations to reduce their energy consumption. Left unchecked, the energy and carbon footprint of AI could become a significant concern.

To counter this trend, Mr Nusselder introduces the concept of “tiny AI”, or AI systems that are optimized to be much smaller, more efficient, and less energy-hungry without sacrificing high performance. What exactly does tiny AI involve? Can the future of AI be powered by less energy? And how exactly can we ensure that AI continues to grow without depleting the planet’s resources? These critical questions and more are tackled in Roeland Nusselder’s thought-provoking talk.

ESET’s commitment to promoting scientific innovation and progress is seen in its ongoing efforts to foster a deep appreciation for science, celebrate the power of groundbreaking research, and connect with leading thinkers in technology and science. ESET recently partnered with Starmus, the global science communication festival, and brought its 7th edition to Bratislava, Slovakia, in May 2024.

The festival featured a number of thought-provoking perspectives from some of the planet’s foremost thinkers. You can now relive the experience from the comfort of your home and get a taste of how the power of technology is being harnessed to tackle some of the most pressing challenges facing the world today.
